Highlights

  • An Amitābha Buddha relief carved into the rock wall.
  • Buddhist worship spaces integrated with a natural cave.
  • Inscriptions, poems celebrating the scenery and the cultural memory of the Lạng region.

History and origins

The name Tam Thanh recalls a layer of Daoist belief preceding the prominence of Buddhist worship here. Local materials record traces from the Lê period and the continuation of several layers of religious practice.

In 1962, the Nhị Thanh–Tam Thanh scenic complex was designated a national heritage site. Milestones specific to Nhị Thanh should not be substituted for the history of Tam Thanh Pagoda.

Architecture & surroundings

Stone steps lead into the mountain. Worship spaces make use of rock walls and broad sections of the cave; the Amitābha relief carved into the rock is an important identifying feature. Take time to observe the interaction between natural forms and human craftsmanship.

Cultural value

Tam Thanh preserves an encounter between Buddhism, folk belief and the tradition of composing poetry about scenic places. The site is also associated with the memory of Ngô Thì Sĩ, who contributed greatly to the culture of the Lạng region.

Events & festivals

Tam Thanh’s temple festival usually takes place on the full-moon day of the first lunar month, with processions and folk cultural activities in the Nhị Thanh–Tam Thanh area. Please read each year’s announcements for procession routes, ceremony times and traffic arrangements.
