History and origins
Nghệ An tourism materials date the temple to the 15th century and record its former name as Am Sơn tự. Following periods of deterioration, restoration was approved in 2010 and construction began in 2013.
The large buildings visible today are the result of modern restoration and expansion; they should be distinguished from the ancient origins of the religious site.
Architecture & surroundings
The two-storey Đại Hùng Bảo Điện is a focal point, alongside monastic accommodation, courtyards and outdoor statues. The mountainous terrain also provides uphill routes and cave spaces; follow the signs to choose a route suited to your abilities.
Cultural value
Cổ Am sustains the community’s tradition of paying homage to the Buddha and provides a place to learn Buddhist teachings. Expanded facilities for study and practice continue local traditions while bringing a responsibility to protect the landscape when welcoming large numbers of visitors.
Events & festivals
Local tourism sources describe observances for the Buddha’s Birthday, Vu Lan, Amitābha Buddha’s commemorative day and the Buddha’s Enlightenment Day. Please ask the temple for the specific schedule, as service times and retreat participation requirements depend on each programme.
