Highlights

  • An ancestral temple commonly known as Sư Nữ Temple
  • Devotional statues and a Nine Dragons arrangement
  • The Great Hero Hall inaugurated in 2019

History and origins

Đại Nam nhất thống chí and introductory temple materials connect the origins of Linh Vân with Cao Biền during the Tang period. The temple underwent major restoration in 1942 and received national monument designation in 1992. A restoration project was undertaken during the 2010s; the Great Hero Hall was inaugurated for the Buddha's birthday in 2019. Photographs predating that construction show its earlier appearance.

Architecture & surroundings

The complex includes a three-entrance gate, Buddha hall, patriarchs' hall and gardens. Carvings, inscribed boards, wooden statues and the Nine Dragons arrangement are notable features. New architecture serving larger groups of practitioners coexists with objects preserved from earlier periods.

Cultural value

Cần Linh is associated with the history of Buddhist nuns in Nghệ An and social mutual aid. Sources also record the temple assisting residents, sheltering cadres and serving the community during wartime.

Events & festivals

The temple has hosted the Buddha's birthday, the Hương sen xứ Nghệ festival and Buddhist study and practice activities. The 2019 Buddha's birthday celebration included the inauguration of the Great Hero Hall. Please consult temple announcements for each year's programme.
