History and origins
The temple developed in association with Từ Đạo Hạnh and Lý-period Buddhism, expanding through successive eras. The heritage area extends beyond the main temple to related structures and caves around the mountain.
Architecture & surroundings
The worship layout places Buddhist shrines in front and a saint’s shrine behind. Two tiled-roof bridges, the water pavilion and lake form an ensemble closely connected to the villages of xứ Đoài.
Lake, pavilion, bridges and temple roofs create the characteristic landscape at the foot of Sài Sơn. The complex extends beyond the main temple; mountain and cave routes have different walking conditions, so choose according to your fitness and on-site guidance.
Cultural value
Water puppetry and traditions about Từ Đạo Hạnh are notable cultural features. Folk legends should be distinguished from documented historical events.
Memories of Zen master Từ Đạo Hạnh are woven into religious life and water puppetry. The pavilion in the lake reveals the relationship between folk performance, festivals and the village landscapes of xứ Đoài.
