Highlights

  • The bronze temple on the summit
  • The forested mountain landscape of Yên Tử
  • Heritage sites of the Trúc Lâm Zen tradition

History and origins

The temple’s predecessor dates to the Later Lê period. The present bronze structure was completed in 2007. The history of Đồng Temple should be distinguished from the longer history of the wider Yên Tử heritage area.

Architecture & surroundings

The small bronze temple echoes traditional architecture on a rocky summit. Shrines to Śākyamuni Buddha and the Three Patriarchs of Trúc Lâm stand within an expansive natural landscape.

Đồng Temple is a high point in a complex containing many temples, hermitages, stupas and pilgrimage paths. Images of the mountain path show its access setting; not every Yên Tử structure is located immediately beside Đồng Temple.

Cultural value

Yên Tử is associated with Trần Nhân Tông’s religious life and the formation of a Vietnamese Zen lineage. Its cultural value includes monuments, forests, mountains and pilgrimage traditions.

Yên Tử is linked with Trúc Lâm and the monastic life of Buddhist king Trần Nhân Tông. Exploration may begin at the lower sites and continue uphill; pilgrimage does not require forcing yourself to complete the route when health or weather conditions are unsuitable.
