History and origins
Its Lý-period predecessor was named Chúc Thánh. In the late 13th century, the temple expanded in association with Trần Nhân Tông, becoming a place of practice, study and dissemination of Trúc Lâm Zen.
Architecture & surroundings
Successive worship halls, a bell tower and courtyards create an enclosed, contemplative setting. Timber elements and woodblocks require special conservation; not all areas are freely accessible.
The buildings stand along a principal axis, including the Three Jewels hall, patriarch hall and bell tower. The patriarch hall honours the Three Patriarchs of Trúc Lâm; timber frames, brick courtyards and tiled roofs give the ancestral temple its quiet character.
Cultural value
The woodblocks record scriptures, monastic rules and lineage materials, illuminating Buddhist printing, study and transmission. The name Đức La helps identify the correct temple.
Woodblocks are carved wooden printing plates for religious books, not merely decorative objects. This collection reflects the temple’s role in teaching and preserving Hán and Nôm writing; access must follow conservation requirements.
