Highlights

  • A Buddhist sanctuary in a natural rock cave
  • A Mạc-period inscription on the cave wall
  • Mountain and Lô River scenery
  • A spring festival featuring a water procession

History and origins

According to An Tường ward’s introduction, the temple was built in 1537 under Mạc Đăng Doanh. The inscription carved on the rock wall is important evidence for the site’s history. Through different periods the cave temple was also associated with local historical activities; its buildings and supporting facilities have been repaired and expanded.

Architecture & surroundings

The sanctuary is arranged inside the cave, making use of its natural vault and stalactites. Outside lies a mountain landscape near the Lô River; the higher path opens views distinct from the enclosed worship space. Protect the rock walls and inscriptions and walk slowly on the steps.

Cultural value

Hương Nghiêm combines Buddhist activities with the local community’s festival culture. The spring festival’s water procession reflects the community’s connection with the Lô River and wishes for a peaceful life and favourable harvests.

Events & festivals

Hương Nghiêm Temple’s festival is usually associated with the eighth day of the first lunar month. Tuyên Quang newspaper records the festival on 24 February 2026, with a water procession from the Lô River, prayers for peace and a cultural programme. Please consult each year’s announcements when arranging your visit.
