Thiên Tượng is an ancient temple on Hồng Lĩnh Mountain, with a quiet setting of stepped paths, greenery and mountain-lake scenery. It preserves successive layers of local memory concerning Buddhist study, practice and the care of the temple.

History and origins

Local materials describe the temple as dating from the Trần dynasty. It was devastated in 1885, and Đào Tấn organised its restoration in 1901. Later restoration work helped sustain religious activities.

In 2004, the temple and Thiên Tượng Lake were designated a national heritage site. Each restoration forms part of its history but does not replace the original founding period.

Architecture & surroundings

The Thượng Tịnh and Hạ Tịnh buildings, ancestral hall and stupa area follow the mountain terrain. Stone steps, courtyards and trees create transitions between structures. The great temple bell and old stupas are worth exploring with guidance from those responsible for the site.
