Walk slowly along the scripture-garden paths and do not sit, stand or place belongings on the stone slabs. Take time to reflect on individual verses rather than rushing to see everything. Follow temple guidance when entering the Buddha hall or viewing old statues, and keep phones silent.

Highlights

  • A Dhammapada garden with Vietnamese verses engraved on stone.
  • The main hall, patriarch hall, scripture repository and stupas.
  • A history associated with eminent monks of southern Vietnamese Buddhism.

History and origins

In 1894, Lê Văn Gồng encouraged the building of Đông Hậu Temple from a small hermitage. In 1910, Venerable Hoằng Chỉnh became abbot and renamed it Phước Hậu. Associated with Venerables Khánh Anh and Thiện Hoa, the temple was designated a national revolutionary historical heritage site in 1994.

Architecture & surroundings

The main hall, middle hall and rear patriarch hall connect with gardens, stupas and scripture stones. A façade with an upper-storey form and small tower shapes provides a recognisable appearance. The Dhammapada garden is arranged as eight bodhi leaves, evoking the Noble Eightfold Path.

Cultural value

The Dhammapada translation by Venerable Thích Minh Châu is displayed in the landscape for visitors to read directly. Alongside the patriarchal temple’s historical importance, this presentation connects visiting with learning and practising the Buddha’s teachings.

Events & festivals

The temple holds patriarch memorial ceremonies and Buddhist activities. Please ask for the current schedule if you wish to attend, as anniversary dates, service times and group reception arrangements follow individual announcements.
