History and origins
Texts, steles and bell inscriptions cited in local materials record Lý-period origins and major development under the Trần dynasty, with a construction date of 1262. The temple is associated with the Buddhist activity of Trần Nhân Tông and the Trúc Lâm patriarchs. In 2012, the Trần Temple and Phổ Minh Temple complex was designated a special national monument. The Three Patriarchs of Trúc Lâm statue group at the temple was recognised as a national treasure in 2023.
Architecture & surroundings
The complex includes a three-entrance gate, pond, courtyard, stele pavilion, tower and worship halls. Phổ Minh Tower stands 19.51 m high and has 14 storeys, forming the site's focal point. The main temple is arranged in the shape of 工, with a front hall, incense hall and upper sanctuary. Lotus-petal column bases, sacred stone animals and dragon carvings demonstrate historic artistic value. The dragon-carved door panels displayed at the temple are reproductions; the originals are preserved in a museum.
Cultural value
Phổ Minh reflects Thiên Trường's position during the Trần period and the history of Trúc Lâm Buddhism. The statue of the Buddhist king Trần Nhân Tông entering Nirvana and other surviving objects provide a basis for understanding the relationship between dynastic history and religious life.
Events & festivals
Within the monument complex, the early-spring Seal Opening ceremony and the eighth-lunar-month festival associated with Trần Temple attract large crowds. Phổ Minh Temple's own ceremonies and schedules should be checked separately through the temple and management body before a visit.
