Begin at the heritage area’s information point to distinguish the temple from shrines and mountain routes. Choose a route suited to your abilities and wear appropriate shoes. When viewing statues, stelae or the Cửu Phẩm Liên Hoa structure, respect barriers and do not touch, turn or climb the structures without permission.

Highlights

  • The legacy of the three Trúc Lâm patriarchs and the patriarch worship spaces.
  • The Three Buddhas of the Three Times and historic inscriptions.
  • Temple architecture integrated with Côn Sơn’s mountain forests.

History and origins

Management-board materials give differing accounts of the temple’s beginnings but agree on Côn Sơn’s important role under the Trần dynasty. It was expanded during the 14th century and restored in later centuries.

Inscriptions, statues and archaeological findings provide evidence for studying individual phases; today’s appearance includes both historic and reconstructed elements.

Architecture & surroundings

The complex includes a three-entrance gateway, Buddha and patriarch halls, courtyards, corridors and related structures. The Three Buddhas of the Three Times and the Thanh Hư Động stele merit close observation; roof, timber and stone designs reveal successive styles.

Cultural value

Côn Sơn connects Trúc Lâm heritage with history, literature and landscape. The temple is one part of a larger heritage area, so nearby shrines, hermitages and scenic sites should each be understood according to their own functions.

Events & festivals

The Côn Sơn–Kiếp Bạc festivals have programmes announced by the organisers each year. Please check the ceremonies specifically taking place at Côn Sơn Temple and its opening times before travelling; schedules for other sites in the complex should not be substituted for the temple’s own.
