- The name Hoằng Phúc was bestowed during Minh Mạng’s reign.
- A worship complex restored after the upheavals of war.
History and origins
Local records state that Trần Nhân Tông visited Tri Kiến Hermitage in 1301. In 1609, Nguyễn Hoàng ordered the construction of Kính Thiên Pagoda; in 1821, Emperor Minh Mạng renamed it Hoằng Phúc.
War severely damaged the buildings. Modern restoration aims to continue Buddhist worship while preserving the surviving objects and traces of the past.
Architecture & surroundings
The complex contains a rebuilt gate, courtyards and worship halls, together with surviving objects such as bells and statues. When viewing photographs, note when they were taken: pre-restoration images may show only foundations or an old gate, unlike the site’s present appearance.
Cultural value
Hoằng Phúc connects the story of Buddhism under the Trần and Nguyễn dynasties with the lives of Lệ Thủy residents. The shared effort to revive the temple reflects the community’s wish to retain a place for culture and spiritual life.
Events & festivals
Please ask the temple about current ceremonies, festivals and study programmes. Specific dates should be checked against new announcements; past heritage designation or inauguration ceremonies are historical milestones, not annual schedules.
