  • The history of a Nguyễn-dynasty royal temple
  • The Long Vân Khế Hội painting
  • The old main hall preserved during new construction

History and origins

Emperor Thiệu Trị founded the temple in 1844 on land associated with his childhood. It underwent numerous repairs, including a major restoration in 1950. In 2022, the old main hall was moved approximately 19 m to preserve it during redevelopment.

Architecture & surroundings

The grounds contain both old and new architecture. The old main hall with the Long Vân Khế Hội painting should be distinguished from the newer hall; old photographs may show a different arrangement from today.

The three-entrance gateway, stele pavilions and bell structures deserve attention alongside the shrines. Photographs taken before 2022 show the earlier layout; on site, distinguish the new hall from the old main hall that was relocated for preservation.

Cultural value

The temple illustrates the relationship between Buddhism and the Nguyễn dynasty and remains important in Huế’s Buddhist life. Moving and retaining the old main hall reflects a conservation effort.

The Long Vân Khế Hội painting, with dragons and clouds, belongs to the main-hall setting. Preserving the old building enables the artistic memory of this royal temple to continue through present construction and restoration.
